******************* NEW COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT ************************

Students! Interested in an exciting new way to take an introductory science course in a spectacular field setting? Two new courses, offered by Collins Living-Learning Center, in conjunction with the Dept. of Geological Sciences and the College of Arts & Sciences, offer students a unique opportunity for field study–either in the volcanic mountains of the Sierra Nevada or the lush forests of south-central Indiana. The two courses are open to both science and non-science students and both offer College CASE N&M credit.

Geology G188 (Collins L130) “Volcanoes of the Eastern Sierra Nevada: Geology and Natural Heritage of the Long Valley Caldera,” offers a hands-on, inquiry-oriented introduction to geological and environmental sciences in some of the most spectacular and geologically active areas of the western U.S. The class is taught by Michael Hamburger, professor of Geological Sciences and John Rupp, research scientist with the Indiana Geological Survey. The course will be taught in Summer I, and will include a prerequisite seminar class during the second half of the spring semester, followed by a 2-week field trip to the Sierras, May 17 – 31. Application deadline: Feb. 24, 2012.

Further information is available at the course web site: http://www.indiana.edu/~sierra/

Collins L230, “Learning from Nature: Permaculture” is taught by IU Religious Studies professor David Haberman, in conjunction with Peter Bane, author of The Permaculture Handbook: Garden Farming for Town and Country, Keith Johnson, Editor of Permaculture Activist magazine, and Rhonda Baird, permaculture practictioner and teacher. This course offers students hands-on experience with the rapidly growing and internationally recognized design system for creating sustainable human environments that create ecologically sound and economically prosperous human comunities. The course gives students both innovative conceptual tools and practical skills for creating sustainable communities. The class includes two intensive weeks of being outdoors, classwork, and camaraderie at the White Violet Center for Eco-Justice. Application deadline: Mar. 30, 2012.

Further information is available at the course web site: http://www.indiana.edu/~llc/academics/permaculture.shtml

Dear Anthropology students,

The Anthropology Graduate Student Association Annual Symposium will be taking place this week! Attached is a schedule of events and below is some more information about the keynote speaker. This year’s symposium, Branching Out: Anthropology and Interdisciplinary Approaches, will take place from Friday, February 24 to Sunday, February 26. Anthropology’s four-field approach has allowed researchers to explore human diversity in a multiplicity of ways. As we move into the 21st century, these varied approaches are increasingly challenging anthropologists to incorporate the strengths of other disciplines, especially through collaborative projects. Anthropology also provides valuable insights for studying humanity that are incorporated by other departments, and this interdisciplinary dialogue offers many exciting new avenues of research. This symposium will showcase the variety of projects pursued by scholars across disciplinary lines to better understand the human experience.

Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Emily Frank (Indiana University ’06), who completed her dissertation research on the social impacts of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Zambia. She currently holds two positions: the first as a Research Associate with the Department of Anthropology at IU which allows her to continue to pursue research in Southern Africa on the social impacts of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the subsequent international interventions that arise in efforts to manage it. The second position is as a full time Senior Strategist at In-Sync, a global business research and consulting firm located in Toronto. The firm specializes in understanding how patients experience illness, particularly chronic illness, such to help the healthcare industry better address patient needs and enhance health outcomes. Here is more information about the keynote:

“Opportunity and Illness: AKA ‘The Junkie Stole My Sandwich!’”
Friday, February 24th at 6:30pm
Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology Lecture Hall; Symposium Reception to Follow in the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology Atrium

The ways in which understandings of illness shift to create new opportunities and new modes of meaning are both critical cultural features on a local and global scale. Not all of these emergent meanings and opportunities are positive, but they are powerful indicators of information flows and social structures. I will explore some of the ways this is most evident and suggest what the Anthropological role is in unpacking these. In an era in which the Governor of Florida and leading Anthropologists are questioning the very validity of the Anthropological discipline I believe Anthropologists can play a vital role in demonstrating what these stories tell us about our contemporary era as well as reconfiguring how they are told, to lead to more positive outcomes. This discussion will be drawn from my work on HIV/AIDS in Zambia, work in international development, across what are known as Pharmerging Markets and from within the Pharmaceutical industry.

ABSTRACT
Emerging research on the role of media in social and political unrest in North Africa and the Middle East reminds us that newer networked media tools like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and the mobile Web are not inherently transformative. What matters is how people select and use these tools and in what cultural contexts. However, this does not mean that a search for generalizable patterns of transformation is futile. In this talk, I discuss a work-in-progress that explores how activists in the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan use newer networked media tactically. I begin by drawing on my past work in Kyrgyzstan and on more recent research to discuss how newer media have opened up opportunities for alternative forms of expression, participation, and learning in Kyrgyzstan. I then discuss and seek feedback on a study I am designing that investigates an information technology activist culture and its influence in Kyrgyzstan. Considerable evidence suggests that this small group may be playing a role in spreading awareness and in connecting otherwise separate domestic and international people that can lead to new ideas, new identities, and new opportunities for group actions, as well as new tensions and entrenchment. Finally, I suggest that this small group of IT activists may be filling an information and community-building void left by the increasingly irrelevant news media in Kyrgyzstan.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Hans Ibold is an assistant professor at the IU School of Journalism. His research examines media and cultural globalization and the role journalism plays when media technologies and cultures converge. He was the technology reporter for the Los Angeles Business Journal, arts editor for the Idaho Mountain Express in Ketchum, Idaho and an online editor and features writer for Getty.edu. From 2003 to 2005, he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Kyrgyzstan, where he continues to travel and carry out media research. Ongoing projects investigate Twitter and social change and new media literacies.
